Make a Difference in the Community - Develop Lifelong Skills - Great for College Applications and Resumes

The development of youth leadership is a common need expressed by almost every community organization. To address this need, the Nikkei Federation Youth Development Programs team developed the Rising Stars Youth Leadership Program. Rising Stars is a leadership development & cultural education program for high school students.

The goal of the program is to train leaders and to inspire youth involvement in the Japanese American community by presenting a series of active, engaging workshops on a variety of leadership topics.

Workshops topics include:
• Japanese American Community Awareness
• Working in groups
• Networking & Career Development
• Effective & Persuasive Presentations
• Assertiveness Training & Time Management

Participants will have an opportunity to apply their skills by completing a group project. The 2006-07 Rising Stars group project was the Japanese American Community Miniature Golf Tournament and Raffle. Proceeds from the March 2007 tournament and raffle are used to support future Nikkei Federation leadership programs. More information about the tournament...

Where and when:
Sessions will be held on selected Saturdays from November through March, at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in Little Tokyo, Downtown Los Angeles.

How to Apply:
Applications for the 2008-2009 Rising Stars Youth Leadership Program will be available approximately July 2008.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in high school. Enrollment will be limited to a maximum of 25 students. Youth throughout the greater Los Angeles area are encouraged to participate in this program.
