Why

The development of youth leadership is a common need expressed by almost every community organization. To address this need, the Nikkei Federation Youth Development Programs team developed the Rising Stars Youth Leadership Program.

“We understand that the future of our community lies squarely on the shoulders of our youth,” said Ann Masuda, Chair of the Rising Stars Program. "We’ve seen firsthand how the skills that are taught in this program have helped the participants in their academic, professional and community endeavors."

What

The Rising Stars program is a five month leadership development & cultural education program for high school students. The Program is designed to teach leadership skills that can be used by the students in school, in their careers and back in their communities. The students will participate in a series of fun and interactive workshops which will be held on one or two Saturdays per month throughout the Program.

Workshops include:

"Cultural Values," a workshop designed to recognize stereotype based biases that may affect the students in their education and careers and how to deal with them.

"Working in Groups," a workshop in which the students will learn about different person-ality styles and how best to deal with personalities that are similar to and different from their own.

"Assertiveness," a workshop exploring the advantages and disadvantages of assertive versus passive behavior in school and at work and where to draw the line between assertive and overly aggressive behavior.

"Networking," a workshop in which the students will learn the benefits of networking and will receive practical tips on how to approach and talk to people in a variety of settings.

"Speak to Persuade," a workshop which will teach practical elements of an effective presentation, including body language, eye contact, hand gestures as well as structuring the speech.

"Financial Fitness," a workshop that will teach students basic and practical financial skills

The students will practice what they learn through a group project that will be held at the end of the Program. The 2009-2010 Rising Stars group project was the Japanese American Community Miniature Golf Tournament and Raffle. More information about the tournament...
